I was paying some of my bills with an automatic payment system. These bills were the same amount each month, things like insurance payments, etc.. and were to be paid on a set date. Without notice US Bank started holding those monies from my account weeks in advance, which naturally sent my account into a downward spiral of overdraft fees. After getting no satisfaction at the branch level I started contacting the big boys and finally got reimbursed for all my overdrafts. That said, I immediately closed ALL (had three) my accounts with US Bank and am now very happy to be a member of our local credit union. Heck, they even know my name!!! Credit unions ROCK!!! They offer everything that the big banks offer, except for the headaches!","pt":"Feb 28, 2010 12:59"},{"nm":"elliott higgins","rs":"0","ms":"My daughter at college has a debit card. Her college cafateria only takes credit cards and won\'t take out of state debit cards. Even though she had money in her savings. They charged $33 for a 1.58 overcharge. this was not noticed and no notice from the bank. The charges added up to $354 and she could not pay her rent. I am meeting with the bank to stop this foolishness. Wish me good luck. I will go to court if they do not cancel these charges.\n","pt":"Jan 28, 2010 10:55"},{"nm":"Laura ","rs":"0","ms":"I was charged overdraft fees for small amounts. What they did at HSBC was pay the larger amount and not charge an overdraft fee because that would mean only one charge of $35. Instead, they charged overdraft fees for three items that were $20 or less. I tried to get a record of exactly when these items were presented for payment, but they couldn\'t supply that information. I\'m sure they have a date/time stamp in the computer for every transaction. There must be some evil genius that has figured out a way to do this. So say there are four charges presented at approximately the same time - one of which is for a couple of hundred dollars and the other three are for ten dollars. The program probably puts the charge for a couple of hundred through while charging for the three $20 dollar charges - making an extra $75 for HSBC. I\'m sure this is programmed to do this. It turns out restaurants and gas stations can have a hold on funds that exceed the amount of the purchase while the transaction is being cleared. Gas stations can hold $75, $100, or $125 and the transaction can take days to clear. During that time the imaginary charge is not reflected in the account balance, but the imaginary charge can cause you to be overdrawn. In my case, the imaginary money was from a restaurant. Apparently they were holding funds for a very large tip (it was take out, so that wasn\'t happening), when another debit transaction came in that put me in imaginary overdraft of less than a dollar, I got charged a real fee of $10. Bank of America did refund the overdraft but said that they were following FDIC guidelines. They kindly offered overdraft protection. Instead of going down that route, we now use only cash at restaurants (or any other place that can charge a tip) and credit cards at gas stations. I guess I should get over my aversion to going inside gas stations so I can pay cash there as well.","pt":"Nov 25, 2009 14:28"},{"nm":"barb hinz","rs":"0","ms":"My son was charged overdraft fees 9 times within 3 days, at $35. a piece, with the fees it just kept making the overdraft higher, finally got the letter of overdraft on his account 4 days after the fact. They would not take any of these off. He was even charged these when he had the money in savings and they did not transfer, this is thanks to Associated Bank of Eau Claire. He no longer has a checkcard, just a card he goes to ATM to take out money, and uses no checks. They said it was a courtesy for them to cover his overdrafts, some courtesy!!!","pt":"Nov 25, 2009 11:52"},{"nm":"CB","rs":"0","ms":"I was charged 38 overdraft fees in ten days at $35 dollars a fee totaling $1330 with my Bank of America account. I was moving and did not look at my account over that week. At the end of the ten days my account would have been even without the overdraft fees. I called Bank of America and went to my branch several times and they denied any refund in overdraft fees. The next month when my account was in reconciliation I called and they dropped the amount to $650 if I made a monthly payment. I made my first monthly payment and then they closed my account. They moved the amount up to $850 I paid that off with a credit card and now I will not be able to get a checking account for 7 years.","pt":"Nov 25, 2009 01:35"},{"nm":"Ken","rs":"0","ms":"Debit card fees are a moving target, and how and when items post are also a mystery. Available balance is always lagging at BOA, and how items are charged, from largest to smallest dollar amount, instead of what is in the clients best interest continues to mystify me. I have seem my balance back dated, with balances changing almost daily in days gone by. It should be straightforward, $20 today should be $20 tomorrow, but it is not.\nI am amazed that we are not dealing with real time backing and funds availability with banks.....yet Paypal seems to manage it???","pt":"Nov 24, 2009 23:20"}]}); });
