The Haitian government should look for solutions to its own problems. All of the money promised to the Haitian relief will not be what saves that country….it is money that will back a logical plan to relieve some portion of the horror that is visited on that country at regular intervals that can help. \nHousing is a serious issue that must be addressed as soon as possible, watching people rebuilding with bent rebar and chunks of concrete tells me that the new buildings people are trying to cobble together from the ruins will be as bad as the old buildings that fell in on them. University schools of architecture worldwide could compete with each other in designing buildings (homes, apartments, offices) that could be built to withstand both hurricanes and level 7 earthquakes. If it appears that the designs meet a set of agreed upon standards, money and internships to build could be included in the winning of the competition to send students to Haiti to assist in the building and to pay locals to help build their own homes. This could provide safe housing, work skills for the students, and leaders for future building in Haiti. Schools of agriculture throughout the world could compete with plans to remediate soils and design systems for modern agriculture in Haiti that could, with a lot of work, develop into a system for feeding Haitians. \nOther problems could be addressed in similar ways. \nMuch needs to be done in Haiti today but just throwing money at a country that does not know where it is going or how to get out of the hole it is in will not produce a country capable of leading itself anywhere!\n","pt":"Apr 5, 2010 09:36"}]}); });
